A Shrinking Church Meets An Ever-Increasing Hostile Culture

" There is a bad combination brewing: a shrinking Church meeting an ever-increasing hostile culture. ...contraception is the cause for every major crisis that modern man faces: same-sex marriage, divorce and remarriage, abortion, single-parent households. And to the extent that Catholic clerics either kept quiet or jumped on the bandwagon, they will be held responsible. There aren't the numbers among the young to replace and sustain, and that means an even more shrinking crowd of Catholics."

I don't doubt that a lot of what he says is true. However, it's not JUST a matter of contraception. If a couple only has two kids, that's not the issue. The issue is that THE FAITH WAS NOT TRANSMITTED. What I really think is needed is some mechanism to transmit the faith to children. I try to do my best, but without institutional help, it's extremely difficult. The schools aren't doing it much, which leaves the parishes, but it's just sort of ... nothing right now.

Contraception is a symptom of the problem, not the problem itself, I think.

Granted, the practice of contraception is not THE problem per se, rather an extremely serious symptom. The underlying cause is of course a lack of fidelity to Church (Christ's) teaching. And of course that's where Matthew 28:19-20 comes in. It takes a functioning Church (not a village as Liberals claim).
