When we’re tempted by the fear that the Church will be “swept away by the forces of history” — abortion, gay marriage, suppression of Catholic charities and businesses — we should remember that there was a time when rich and powerful forces conspired with the intellectual elite of Hungary to suppress the Cistercians and destroy them entirely. They were reputed to be “stuck in the Dark Ages,” doomed to be “left behind by history,” whereas their oppressors were thought (even by some Catholics) to represent the future: something bright, shining, and new.  “We will bury you,” they said (not realizing that resurrection has always been Christ’s special gift to the faithful).

But where are those utopian reformers now?  They’ve been swept into the trash heap of history, in that place we reserve not only for the departed, but for the cads and thugs and cowards.  They’re not only dead, their memory is despised.

Pseudo-Catholic Thugs Hit Again

Pseudo-Catholicism anyone?

Make no mistake, it’s the dominant reality.

As many of you no doubt already know, Sr. Jane Dominic Laurel has been so traumatized by the thuggery of Catholic parents who are 'hurt' by Church teaching, she's quit all teaching and is taking a sabbatical.

Here's a reality check:

With very little exception, there's not a dime's worth of difference between what was done to Sister Jane and what is done to every priest, teacher, parent in every parish and school in the United States (and Canada) when you attempt to teach moral theology.

Think about it. When was the last time a priest or teacher taught moral theology without a group of thugs calling the Chancery who then tells the priest to never do it again?

It's all been silenced.

Ye Shall Judge Angels

According to 1 Corinthians Chapter 6 we are to settle lawsuits among believers.

1 Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to be judged before the unjust, and not before the saints ? 2 Know you not that the saints shall judge this world ? And if the world shall be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters ? 3 Know you not that we shall judge angels ? how much more things of this world ? 4 If therefore you have judgments of things pertaining to this world, set them to judge, who are the most despised in the church. 5 I speak to your shame. Is it so that there is not among you any one wise man, that is able to judge between his brethren ? 6 But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before unbelievers.

Last September, I was assaulted and knocked to the ground outside St. Patrick’s Church before Mass.

I had hoped that the Archbishop of St. John’s, The Rgt. Rev. Martin Currie, would mediate between my assailant, a fellow Catholic, and myself in order to resolve the matter in Christian fashion and avoid further scandal and regular court action but there was no interest shown in such an approach. I had also called upon Fr. Wayne Dohey, my assailant’s pastor, to take action as well but again, no interest was shown for such a proposal.

Having noted that, the charges that I laid against a fellow Catholic for a vicious assault upon my person were settled today in the court of the unbeliever, i.e. a local Provincial Court in St. John’s.

My assailant, Anthony Kearsey, from the beginning pleaded Not Guilty, but today at the last possible moment before trial, pleaded Guilty to the charges of common assault—by way of his lawyer—and the presiding judge had the Guilty verdict entered into the record as well as imposing a $300 fine. Mr. Kearsey himself did not show up in court and in the end offered no personal apology. I requested of the Crown prosecutor that she read out loud my Victim Impact Statement before sentencing, which she did. It appears immediately below.

Of course I hoped that the media might show some interest in the fact that my assailant had pleaded Guilty to the charges so I tweeted out a message earlier this morning before heading out to court:

As expected, I saw no sign of reporters anywhere near my courtroom, although they seemed to be  scurrying about all the other courtrooms. From the very beginning, the media, including pro-life reporters, have shown no interest whatever in this incident, although when another incident better suited their purposes they were all over it.

This is the current pro-life reality.

Pro-choice activist Rolanda Ryan said the head count might be misleading, as there is what she called "complacency" among many Canadians about existing laws that make abortion legal.

Reliable reports indicate that one of the sisters attend Mass infrequently if not very infrequently while the other sister more frequently but perhaps not regularly. Those who carry out pro-life vigils in front of the abortion mill know both sisters very well from regular contact and conversations that have taken place outside the centre.

At a Mass at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church on Mundy Pond Road in September 2012 at around the time of Rolanda’s husband’s death both Rolanda Ryan, as well as Darlene Ryan Derible, joined the Communion line and received the Holy Eucharist. Celebrant was Fr. Roy Thomas. Catholics who know both Rolanda and Darlene have confirmed that both individuals received Holy Communion at that time and possibly at other special times when family members have been remembered at Mass at either St. Teresa’s or at St. Patrick’s, etc. At least one concerned Catholic approached Fr. Roy Thomas after Mass at that time to protest the reception of Holy Communion by these women on grounds that they work at the local abortuary.

Regarding the funeral notice linked above, the following is noted:  “Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in Ken's honor, to a charity he supported for the last two decades, would be equally appreciated. Donations may be made to: Planned Parenthood, 203 Merrymeeting Road, St. John’s, NL, A1C 2W6.”

Now this entire tragedy spells S-C-A-N-D-A-L in a multitude of ways: scandalous that someone raised Catholic could ever contemplate facilitating or assisting in the murder of unborn children, let alone protesting in public a woman’s “right” to murder her children; scandalous that fellow Catholics could sit in pews and watch known baby killers join in the Communion line to desecrate the Holy Eucharist without rushing to protect the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ from sacrilege; scandalous that priests can’t/won’t/don’t stop it; scandalous that Bishops seem indifferent or powerless to address such abominations. 

But apparently it's a scandal only to a few "extremist" Catholics like myself. It certainly is not much of a scandal at all to the great majority of the Catholics involved. After all, did we see a front page notice in the local newspaper or the Archdiocesan website lamenting the fact that so-called Catholics who run the local abortion centre received Holy Communion inadvertently last Sunday at St. Teresa's parish? Did we hear that local Catholics were so outraged to discover this that they demanded from the Archbishop assurances that such a thing might never happen again? Did we subsequently see on the Archdiocesan website or the Archbishop's blog a statement from Archbishop Currie that such a disgrace would never happen in his Archdiocese a second time?

Questions like these are best answered outside Catholic parishes by Catholics themselves.

Clearly there has been a breakdown of monumental proportions here given the official teaching of the Catholic Church on abortion, the Holy Eucharist, grave sin, Canon law and scandal. It’s almost as though we might be dealing in Canada with a different religion altogether, of a pseudo-catholic nature.
